What is Position (Search)?

Position in search refers to the specific ranking placement of a URL in a search engine results page for a given query. Position 1 is the top organic result. In Google Search Console, position is reported as an average across all queries and appearances. Positions above 10 generally correspond to page two or beyond of search results.

Why it matters

The difference between position 1 and position 5 can mean a 10x difference in click-through rate, making even small position improvements highly valuable for traffic.
